How should I care for my buckle?
Your buckle is solid bronze, which means it will last for thousands of years no matter what you do. But to keep it looking nice in this century, when you find it is looking dull, take a little bit of cotton cloth and buff it up. If it gets dirty, you can clean it with water. Using soap or detergents to clean your bronze will mess up the patina, so avoid them.
What kind of finish do you put on the buckles?
We give them a light patina and a light coating of lacquer to slow the bronze’s oxidizing process. The patina will give a darker color to the recessed parts of your buckle which adds dimension and richness to your final piece.
What does the hardware look like on the back of the buckle?
What are the dimensions of the buckle?
The wax blanks that come with your kit are 2.25” X 3”. Assuming you keep your buckle the size and shape of the waxes (which is in no way required), that will also be the size of your final buckle.
What is a casting?
A casting is the final bronze version of your sculpture. When the metal is poured, the pouring process is called “casting.”
What is chasing?
Chasing is the use of a file and other tools to clean up imperfections in the metal after it has been cast.
Now that I’ve bought one kit, can I use it to make another buckle for less?
Yes! The cost of casting the second wax in your kit is $60. We also have pricing for duplicates and groups.
When I send my buckle back to you, how long before I get it back?
You will receive your finished buckle six-eight weeks after you return your carved wax to us.
How long are kits good for?
Technically they are guaranteed for one year from the date of purchase. But as long as we are making castings (And we have no plans to stop) we will honor all kits. We know that making a piece of art takes time and consideration, and we regularly cast buckles that are returned to us several years after the kit was purchased.
Can I return my unopened kit for a refund?
Sorry, the size and nature of our business makes it impossible for us to accept returns. We consider the purchase of a kit the same as purchasing a casting service from our foundry.
What if my casting doesn’t work?
In five years and counting of selling kits, we’ve only had two castings not come out. In the extremely unlikely event your buckle does not cast, we will send you a new kit with many many apologies.
